Over the years our music industry has seen a great deal of growth & development and must be applauded because, truth be told when Nigeria is called giant of Africa, its the one area that would get no arguments.
With this surge in the financial success of so many Artistes from the likes of Wizkid, Davido, Dbanj, etc one issue still bugs my mind now, not taking anything away from these amazing talents but why has our industry become so highly dependent on club rocking songs?? Why does this determine the success of an artiste? This trend has one way or another forced artistes without that natural flair for party rocking songs to dabble into it , dumbing down their lyrics and showing less of their natural creativity because they want to have the next club hit, and under these circumstances we find amazing talents going to waste.
Not everyone wants to wake up in the morning to pop champagne or make it rain in the club , YES there are artistes that give us the cool, heart warming intellectually creative songs but commercially they have little to show for their effort because show promoters , CD marketers, Label execs attach little value to material from them instead they keep telling them "go commercial" ,Are they trying to say that Nigerians don't listen to good music or that we aren't intelligent enough to know good lyrics ? I believe with the right packaging and a positive spirit every talented Nigerian artiste no matter the kind of music you do as long as it is good you can become a superstar.
I was watching TV the other day with my mum and the first thing she said after we watched four Nigerian music video was "how come they all sound alike" and the key words she picked out were "Omoge. Champagne, dance, party, spending money"
So I ask , Is that all the NIGERIAN MUSIC industry have to offer ?
